When we see information about aging, the emphasis is usually on how we can stay younger longer through diet and exercise. Of course how we take care of our bodies is very important, but the message is too simple, giving us the illusion that we have more control than we do.
How a person ages depends upon a whole host of factors outside of our control, including genetics, opportunity, environment, circumstances, and luck. What also matters are past illnesses and accidents, how they were handled and what residual damage they left behind.
All of these factors add up to changes which are both individual and also general - each person ages differently, but we all have a lot in common.
Whatever aging brings physically, there is a corresponding flow of emotions which are not talked about it very much. Normalizing those emotions and learning how to deal with them is the purpose of my book, Age Your Own Way; Navigating Changes, Emotions, and Stereotypes.
